The Colorado River Walkers are hosting two walks/hikes this Saturday.
Balcones District Park is a 59 acre park in northwest Austin. Its features include a swimming pool, a play scape, and picnic areas. The park is located near the sites of Duval and Waters Park, small towns that were active in the late 1880’s but no longer exist.
One walk route will be almost completely on natural trails in the wooded area behind the park. Part of the route is flat but there will be sections that are rocky.
The other route goes under the MoPAC into the upscale shopping and residential complex called The Domain. This route will be entirely on paved surfaces. This route is big wheel stroller friendly if you have young children.
For both routes pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash. Water and bathrooms are available at the start/finish.
This is a sanctioned Volksmarching event. You are required to register at the start (anytime between 8 and 11am). Registration costs $3.00. You will carry a start card with you and at checkpoints your card will be marked.
This is not a speed event. You are encouraged to bring along your children and walk/talk and spend some time together enjoying the great outdoors.
When you finish (anytime before 3pm) you turn in your start card. If you are an official Volkssporter you will have an Event and/or Distance Record Book. When you turn in your start card you will receive a stamp in your record books.
If you do not as yet have an AVA record book, they will be for sale at the start/finish. Just ask for a new walker’s packet. The packet is $5.00 but it contains three coupons for free registration ($9.00 value) as well as both an Event and a Distance book.
Balcones District Park is at 12017 Amherst Dr. 78759.
Driving north on Loop 1/MoPac, take Duval exit. Turn left at the light, crossing over MoPac (this is now Duval) and turn right at the first signal. The park is on the right. Driving south on Loop 1/MoPac, take Parmer Lane exit. Turn right at the light onto Parmer Lane. The next light is Amherst. Turn left and the park will be about a mile away and on the left.
Everyone welcome to join us there!
