Come hike Dana Peak Park on 8/3/2013

TROTTING TEXAS TURTLES

TROTTING TEXAS TURTLES

This is an emotional event for two reasons.  It is a memorial to club member Mary Blankenship who passed away in 2011.  Mary was one of the original founders of the Trotting Texas Turtles Volksmarching Club back in 1984.  Even after her health deteriorated Mary came to support the various clubs by working checkpoints.  She is pictured here working checkpoint at the Fort Davis event in 2005.

The second reason for the strong emotions is the fact that this is the Trotting Texas Turtles last event.  The club’s membership has dwindled as the walkers aged and we have been unable to attract any younger walkers to take over this club.  As the saying goes, “All good things come to an end.”

Start/Finish point and registration will be at the covered pavilion, Dana Peak Park, Stillhouse Hollow Lake, Harker Heights, Texas.

Tell gate attendant you are there for the walk to avoid paying park day use fees.

START TIME:7:30-10:00 AM. Off the trail by 1:00 PM.

This is a Volksmarching event and you need to register to get a start card. We request a $3.00 donation to help defray the cost of hosting the event.

There will be a 5K and 10K option. The 10K will take you to the top of Dana Peak on rocky trail where the view of the lake is awesome.  Hiking stick recommended.

Directions to Walk Location: From North or South on I-35 exit onto US
Hwy 190 West at Belton. Exit Hwy 190 at FM 2410 (Knights Way), turn left crossing over Hwy 190 and continue to Comanche Gap Road (large brown sign for Dana Peak Park will be on your left. Continue on Comanche Gap Road to the park. Gate attendant will direct you to the start area.

If you are interested in collecting a stamp for doing this event there will be “New Walker Packets” for sale at the start. They cost $5.00 but they have three walk coupons inside worth $3.00 each so it is a bargain.
