Houston Walking Club Event – Oct 5th at Independence

The Houston Happy Hikers are hosting this event.  Independence is located twelve miles northeast of Brenham, it was founded in 1835 in Austin’s colony of Anglo Americans.  It became a Baptist religious and educational center of the Republic of Texas. In 1846 it became the first site of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.  In 1854, President Sam Houston was baptized in the Independence Baptist Church. His wife, Margaret Lea Houston, and their oldest son, Sam Houston Jr. are both buried at Independence.  The town council refused the railroad a right of way through town and as trade moved to cities along the railroad the town died.

The walk route will include many historical sites; among them the ruins of the original Baylor University, the grave of Nancy Lea Houston (Sam Houston’s wife), historic homes, markers and the oldest Baptist church in continuous operation in Texas.   After the walk we invite you to explore the Texas Baptist Historical Center, and Rose Emporium.

Start/Finish point and registration will be at the Texas Baptis Historical Center-Museum, 10405 FM 50, Brenham, TX.

START TIME:  9:00 AM – Noon.  Must be finished by 3:00 PM.

This is a Volksmarching event and you need to register to get a start card. We request a $3.00 donation to help defray the cost of hosting the event.  There will be a 5K and 10K option.

Directions to Walk Location: From Houston take US 290 west; at the light before Brenham, turn right onto FM 577 N ( Horton St.) Turn right on TX HWY 105 E. Turn left on FM 50 to Independence. The Historical Center-Museum is at the corner of FM 50 and FM 390. Parking is available in a gravel lot directly across the street.

If you are interested in collecting a stamp for doing this event there will be “New Walker Packets” for sale at the start. They cost $5.00 but they contain three walk coupons inside worth $3.00 each so it is a bargain.
