High Island Volksmarch Sat 03/21/2015

The Houston Happy Hikers are hosting a 5k walk and a 10k walk.   Normally there isn’t an entrance fee to Volksmarching events, but as you can see from the sign above there is at this event.  Also most volksmarches are in areas that allow pets, but this is an animal sanctuary.  No Pets allowed.

High Island rises 32 feet above the surrounding marshes. It is located on a salt dome at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico. High Island’s trees and shrubs provide a good habitat for migrating birds. Bring your binoculars and rest a while in the grandstands overlooking Purkeys Pond. Come walk among the woods and look for the birds.  You may bring your own picnic lunch. You are responsible for taking your trash out of the sanctuary. There are stairs to Purkey’ Pond.

To participate in either of these walking events you are required to register at the start.  Registration is anytime from 8 am – until 11 am.  Registration costs a mere $3.00. You will carry a start card with you and at the checkpoints your card will be marked.

This is not a speed competition. You are encouraged to bring along your children and walk/talk and spend some time together enjoying the great outdoors.

When you finish (anytime before 3 pm) you turn in your start card. If you are an official Volkssporter you will have an Event and/or Distance Record Book. When you turn in your start card you will receive a stamp in your record books.

If you do not as yet have an AVA record book, they will be for sale at the start/finish. Just ask for a new walker’s packet. The packet is $5.00 but it contains three coupons for free registration ($9.00 value) as well as both an Event and a Distance book.

Start Point:  Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary, 5th Street, High Island

Directions:  From Houston drive east on I-10 to Winnie, TX. Turn right (south) on Hwy 124 to High Island. Turn left on 5th street. Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary is on the right.

Hope to see you there!
