High Island Bird Sanctuaries Volksmarch (5/10K) – 04/02/2016

highislandThe Houston Happy Hikers are hosting this event and would like everyone to come join us.  You do not have to be a club member to participate.  The usual $7 entry fee to the Sanctuaries is waived because April 2 is Open House.

High Island rises 32 feet above the surrounding marshes.  It is located on a salt dome at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico.  High Island provides trees and shrubs, a good habitat for migrating birds.  Bring your binoculars and rest awhile in the grandstands overlooking Purkey’s Pond.  Come walk among the woods and look for the birds.  Indians were inhabitants of the area.  Jean Lafitte, the pirate, used the grove of oak trees for parties.

Start/Finish point and registration will be at Boy Scout Woods Sanctuary, Fifth Street, High Island TX 77623

START TIME: 9:00-Noon.  Must be finished by 3:00 PM.

This is a Volksmarching event and you will need to register to get a start card. We request a $3.00 registration fee to help defray the cost of hosting the event.  There will be a 5K and 10K option.

This is not a speed event. You are encouraged to bring along your children and walk/talk and spend some time together enjoying the great outdoors.

When you finish (anytime before 3:00 PM) you turn in your start card. If you are an official Volkssporter you will have an Event and/or Distance Record Book. When you turn in your start card you will receive a stamp in your record books.

If you do not as yet have an AVA record book, they will be for sale at the start/finish. Just ask for a new walker’s packet. The packet is $5.00 but it contains three coupons for free registration ($9.00 value) as well as both an Event and a Distance book.

Directions to Walk Location:  From Houston drive east on I-10 to Winnie TX. Turn right (south) on Hwy 124 to High Island, about 18 miles. Turn left on 5th St. Boy Scout Woods is on the right.

Hope to see you there.
